Using the guide

When you die

Your items and experience go into a soul lantern, lit at the place you died. If that spot is unusable — lava, deep water, the void — the lantern moves to the nearest place you can actually stand.

You keep nothing, but you lose nothing either.

Finding your way back

You receive a Lantern Map when you respawn. Hold it and the action bar shows:

Lantern 143 blocks - ahead and right - 12 up

A trail of light also points from you toward the lantern, rising and falling with the terrain — follow it and you arrive.

Within two blocks the reading changes to Your lantern is right here.

Recovering

Break the lantern. You do not open it; there is nothing to open.

  • Items go back to your inventory.
  • Armor and offhand go back on your body, in the original slots.
  • Experience is released as orbs to collect.

Anything that does not fit falls at your feet.

Several lanterns at once

Dying again before recovering the first lantern is fine — both stay, indefinitely. Nothing expires and nothing is overwritten.

The guide always points at the nearest lantern. To see the rest, use it and pick My Lanterns, or Show in chat for a list you can read back later:

Your 2 soul lanterns:
  - 20 103 54 - 14 blocks
  - 13 99 55 - 210 blocks

Only the world you are standing in is listed. A lantern in the Nether is unreachable from the Overworld without a portal, and its coordinates mean a different place here — listing it would be noise at best and misleading at worst.

If nothing is lit where you are but something is lit elsewhere, you are told that instead, so an empty list never reads as "your loot is gone":

[Soulglass] No soul lantern in this dimension (1 elsewhere)

The guide disappears from your inventory once you have collected everything.

Other players

They cannot break your lantern, and they cannot read your guide — picking one up shows their lanterns, not yours.

Explosions and pistons leave lanterns alone entirely.
